77 Years Of Beers
It's hard to believe now, but there actually was a time in Chicago when you couldn't get a beer. There were no bars on every block and the only way to imbibe was to know someone who most likely owned a Tommy Gun. Thank goodness for the Volstead Act. That was the little piece of legislation that effectively ended Prohibition way back in 1933. The Berghoff's, who apparently did know people, obtained the first two liquor licenses issued.
To celebrate, tonight from 5 to 7pm fourth-generation owner Carlyn Berghoff is offering the same meal her ancestors offered: a sandwich, pickle, hard-boiled egg and a stein of Berghoff draft beer for $7.77.
