Frontera Grill/Topolobampo
Rick Bayless is a celebrity in Chicago. He travels to Mexico frequently to find authentic recipes and to get
ideas so he can add his own twist, and does he ever! Frontera Grill is the more casual side, with a lively bar
and entertaining bartenders, and Topolobampo is the fine dining side. No Chi-Chi's here! There is ALWAYS a wait at Frontera Grill and reservations at Topolobampo are hard to come by, so be prepared to make
an evening of it. The hosts are experienced at quoting wait times, so they're pretty accurate. I went with my
mother on a weeknight and had a forty-five minute wait quoted to us. Since I live two blocks away we dropped her bags off at my
place and came back and had margaritas at the bar. By the time we'd sipped our last drop of tequila heaven (OK, so you don't
sip tequila, but you get my drift), our buzzer rang and we were off for a magnificent dinner. Our server
was a little over-extended that night, but he was attentive when he could
be, recommended perfect wines to go with our entrees, and accommodated my mother's lactose
intolerance.
Mr. Bayless was in the restaurant that evening. We saw him posing with other diners for
photographs as we were finishing our meal. He looked a little tired, but was gracious. Mom
and I decided to give him a break and left quietly, our pallets sated.
