Lou Malnati's

map

I visited Lou Malnati's with some friends on a  Saturday afternoon and was, to put it lightly, disappointed. There weren't many patrons, what with the Blues Fest, the Printers' Row Book Fair, and because restaurants in River North in general are slow on Saturday afternoons, so you would figure the service would be prompt and attentive, right? Harumph. First of all, we wanted a frozen drink because it was so darn hot outside and asked our server for a recommendation (as it says to on the drink menu). He responded that he doesn't drink fruity drinks and only drinks beer so he couldn't help us. OK.

We then ordered a small "Lou", a deep dish pizza with spinach, mushrooms, and sliced tomatoes, and a chicken caesar salad. Anyone who lives in Chicago knows a deep dish pizza takes 40 to 50 minutes. The really bad part was that we didn't see our server during that time. He didn't offer us any bread, more drinks, etc. Kind of hard to do that when he doesn't visit the table...We even had to ask the busser for more water and didn't see the bartender much either (even though we were sitting close to the bar).

We finally got our food, which was wonderful, as well as some fresh, hot bread that had a crispy crust and was soft inside. Yum! He did check on the food quality, but then later tried to take my plate from me while I was holding a piece of pizza to my mouth!

The final straw was when we asked to take the rest to go, but as we weren't finished yet could he bring a box to us. His comment? "I'm used to doing it back there." Egads!

My initial reaction is to recommend getting carry-out or delivery. The food really was great, but I was so disappointed in the service staff that I'm leery to sit down and eat again.
